Ted was born and raised in North Idaho in the town of Mullan, graduating from Mullan High School in 1985. He earned degrees in English and journalism at Whitworth University in Spokane and worked as a reporter and assistant editor for a weekly newspaper in Olympia for three years. An aspiring photographer, Ted worked for a few years at camera stores before earning his master’s in teaching at The Evergreen State College in 1994. He moved to Juneau, Alaska and spent the next 28 years working in the Juneau School District as a substitute teacher, paraeducator, 4th and 5th grade teacher, elementary principal, and district administrator.
Ted spent his 17-year teaching and principal time at Sít' Eetí Shaanáx – Glacier Valley, a pre-k to fifth grade Title 1 elementary school. For six years, he and a teaching partner looped with students from fourth to fifth grade, getting to know students and families very well during the two years of each loop. Ted stayed at the school as principal for another 11 years, continuing to build relationships with families and build a school culture that focused on the whole child – striving to promote resilient, academically prepared students that were ready for middle school and life beyond.
In 2023, Ted retired from the Juneau School District. He, his wife, and one of his grown sons moved to Billings to be closer to family. Ted’s grown daughter, youngest grown son, and grandson remain in Juneau.
Since arriving in Billings, Ted has been working part-time for the City of Billings as a grant administrator and part-time as a reading tutor for dyslexic students at Randak Dyslexia Services. In his spare time, Ted enjoys working in his wood shop, bowling, playing disc golf, going to baseball games, walking his springer spaniel (Scout), and heading down to Beartooth and Yellowstone whenever he can to take pictures.
